Despite having only two full solo studio albums under her belt, the music career of the late singer Lyn Collins was far from the ordinary. Releasing her first single aged 14 in 1962, she sang vocals on the wonderful Northern Soul track, ‘Unlucky in Love’ for the band Charles Pikes and the Scholars. It wasn’t until the early 1970’s though, that her career really started to take off. One of the most obvious reasons for this ,apart from having a phenomenal voice, was that The Godfather of Soul, James Brown who nicknamed her, ‘Female Preacher’, took an interest in her voice. By 1971 she was touring and actively recording with him as a backing singer. If we take all of this into consideration, the songs she recorded (and the success of them) was unfortunately highly depending on her collaborating with Brown; once she stopped working with him in 1976 she had very little success as a solo artist. It was Brown who produced her outstanding 1972 debut album ‘Think About It’ and who also wrote 5 of the 9 songs on it including the below track ‘Just Won’t Do Right.’ With Brown’s band ‘The J.B’s’ playing behind Collin’s vocals, it would probably be more accurate to describe this as a James Brown work written for Collins to sing. ‘Just Won’t Do Right’ is not the most famous track from this album, however, i believe it is the most beautiful and for those of you who are big fans of the Godfather of Soul you will probably notice that he is singing backing vocals on it.
