Idris Muhammad
House Of The Rising Sun
The amount of times the famous song ‘House of The Rising Sun’ has been covered over the years is quite astonishing. Indeed, the song itself has a very ambiguous history surrounding it. It is unclear who the original author of it was and we can only make a guess that it was probably written well over 100 years ago in 19th century America.
Despite being excellently covered by Bob Dylan in 1962, The Animals were the first to give the song success on an international level with their 1965 take on it. Bearing this in mind, the late American ‘soul-jazz’ drummer Idris Muhammad is another artist who jumped on the bandwagon and in 1976 covered this great track. Whilst the classic Animals version of the song will always be the favourite among the masses,
Muhammad and his band deserve credit for their take on it. Their stellar cover completely transforms the song into a sexy, feel good masterpiece that has funk written all of it; one might even go as far as saying it has been ‘funkified!’ Idris Muhammad began his music career at the age of 16 when he was asked to play drums on Fats Domino’s hit rock n’ roll version of the song ‘Blueberry Hill’ released in 1956.
Throughout his career he worked with a number of prominent artists including George Benson and Sam Cooke and he was probably most well-known for his fantastic 1977 underground hit ,’Could Heaven Ever Be Like This.’
